THIRD TERM EXAMINATION
SECTION ONE: READING AND WRITING ( 08 pts )
READ AND ANSWER ACCORDING TO THE TEXT
Charities are worldwide independent organizations that help the poor, the jobless, the homeless and children. They are also involved with human rights, education, medical research and conservation of the environment. In Britain, for instance, there are 18000 charities with a total income of about ₤25 billion. The well-known throughout the world are: Oxfam and ****ter.
These organizations in Britain obtain the funds they use to help the people in need in three main methods. The traditional method of raising money is to organize a flag day. Volunteers stand in busy streets asking members of the public to put money in collecting boxes. Another method is charity shops. Nearly every town in Britain has at least one charity shop. These are run by volunteers who sell at low prices second-hand clothes, books, tapes and CDs, and household goods donated by the public. Last but not least, in recent years, the telethon has proved an effective method of fund raising. During an evening of popular television programmes, television stars as football players, actors and singers request and persuade generous donators to phone and promise money to the charities involved.
